With a goal to provide zero-emission public transport in the area of Kiel, Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel contracted Holland Shipyards Group for the design and delivery of a new ferry for foot passengers, named ‘Gaarden’.
The new build hybrid ferry has been put into operation in August 2020 and sails within the waters of the Kieler Fjord. The Gaarden has a low energy consumption and can be powered by either generators or by means of a batterybank. The batteries will be used for sailing within the city center, resulting in emisson-free transport for the city center. The hull is designed to be able to sail 11 knots per hour with minimum water resistance, optimizing the ship’s efficiency. The design on the inside is equally mportant as the ferry will not only serve to transport passengers from A to B, but is also equipped for tourist day trips in the Kieler Fjord.
